He was educated at Edinburgh University, Edinburgh, Midlothian, ScotlandG.2 He was educated at Leyden University, Leyden, The NetherlandsG.2 He was a practising advocate in 1711.2 He succeeded as the 2nd Baronet Fergusson, of Kilkerran [N.S., 1703] on 14 February 1729.2 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Sutherland from 1734 to 1735.2 He held the office of Lord of Session in 1735.2 He was styled as Lord Kilkerran [Scottish Law Lord] in 1735.2 He held the office of Lord of Justiciary in 1749.2 He wrote the book a compilation of Court of Session decisions, 1738-53, published 1775, published ‘by his son’ (probably George.)2

James Maitland, 7th Earl of Lauderdale was born on 23 January 1718.1 He was the son of Charles Maitland, 6th Earl of Lauderdale and Lady Elizabeth Ogilvy.1 He married Mary Turner Lombe, daughter of Sir Thomas Lombe and Elizabeth Turner, on 24 April 1749.1 He died on 17 August 1789 at age 71.1
He succeeded as the 8th Lord Maitland of Thirlestane [S., 1590] on 15 July 1744.1 He succeeded as the 3rd Baronet Maitland [N.S., 1680] on 15 July 1744.3 He succeeded as the 7th Viscount of Lauderdale, [S., 1616] on 15 July 1744.1 He succeeded as the 7th Earl of Lauderdale [S., 1624] on 15 July 1744.1 He succeeded as the 7th Viscount Maitland [S., 1624] on 15 July 1744.1 He succeeded as the 7th Lord Thirlestane and Boltoun [S., 1624] on 15 July 1744.1 He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel between 1745 and 1765.1 He held the office of Representative Peer [Scotland] between 1747 and 1761.1
