James Maitland, 8th Earl of Lauderdale was born on 26 January 1759.1 He was the son of James Maitland, 7th Earl of Lauderdale and Mary Turner Lombe. He married Eleanor Todd, daughter of Anthony Todd and Eleanor Smith, on 15 August 1782.1 He died on 15 September 1839 at age 80.1

Eleanor Todd was the daughter of Anthony Todd and Eleanor Smith.1 She married James Maitland, 8th Earl of Lauderdale, son of James Maitland, 7th Earl of Lauderdale and Mary Turner Lombe, on 15 August 1782.1 She died on 16 September 1856.1
Her married name became Maitland. After her marriage, Eleanor Todd was styled as Countess of Lauderdale on 17 August 1789.
