He gained the rank of Lieutenant in the County Londonderry.2 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Tory) for Sligo between 1806 and 1812.2 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Tory) for Petersfield between 1812 and 1820.2 He was created 1st Baron Garvagh, of Garvagh, co. Londonderry [Ireland] on 28 October 1818.2 He was appointed Fellow, Royal Society (F.R.S.)2

Stratford Canning, 1st Viscount Stratford de Redcliffe1 
Stratford Canning, 1st Viscount Stratford de Redcliffe was born on 4 November 1786.3 He was the son of Stratford Canning and Mehitabel Patrick.4,5 He married, firstly, Harriet Raikes, daughter of Thomas Raikes and Charlotte Finch, on 3 August 1816.3 He married, secondly, Elizabeth Charlotte Alexander, daughter of James Alexander and Eliza Dundas, on 3 September 1825.1 He died on 14 August 1880 at age 93.1
He was educated at Eton College, Windsor, Berkshire, EnglandG.3 He was educated at King’s College, Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, EnglandG.3 He was 2nd Secretary to Copenhagen between October 1807 and November 1807.3 He was Secretary to Constantinople between 1809 and 1812.3 He was Minister Plenipotentiary to Constantinople between 1810 and 1812.3 He held the office of Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary to Switzerland between 1814 and 1819.3 He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) in 1820.3 He held the office of Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary to the U.S.A. between 1820 and 1823.3 He was Joint Plenipotentiary negotiating with the U.S. Minister to London in 1824.3 He held the office of Ambassador to the Ottoman Empire between 1825 and 1829.5 He was Plenipoteniary to Greece in 1828.5 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) Somerset [U.K.] on 24 April 1852.3 He was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Civil Law (D.C.L.)1 He was appointed Knight, Order of the Garter (K.G.) in 1869.3 On his death, his viscountancy became extinct.5 He has an extensive biographical entry in the Dictionary of National Biography.6

Robert Dundas of Arniston was born on 18 July 1713.3 He was the son of Robert Dundas, Lord Arniston and Elizabeth Watson.3 He married, firstly, Henrietta Carmichael, daughter of Sir James Carmichael and Margaret Baillie, on 17 October 1741.4 He married, secondly, Jean Grant, daughter of William Grant, Lord Prestongrange and Grizel Millar, in 1756.5 He died in 1787.2
