He succeeded as the 3rd Baron Durham of the City of Durham and of Lambton Castle, co. Durham [U.K., 1828] on 27 November 1879.1 He succeeded as the 3rd Earl of Durham [U.K., 1833] on 27 November 1879.1 He succeeded as the 3rd Viscount Lambton [U.K., 1833] on 27 November 1879.1 He held the office of Mayor of Durham in 1899.1 He gained the rank of Lieutenant in the Coldstream Guards.1 He was appointed Knight, Order of the Garter (K.G.) in 1909.1 He held the office of Chancellor of Durham University.1 He held the office of Lord-Lieutenant of County Durham.1 He gained the rank of Honorary Colonel in the 8th Battalion, Durham Light Infantry.1 He gained the rank of Honorary Colonel in the Durham Royal Artillery, Territorial Army.1 He was awarded the Royal Officers’ Decoration (V.D.)1 He was appointed Knight Grand Cross, Royal Victorian Order (G.C.V.O.) in 1911.1 He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) in 1911.1 He held the office of Lord High Stewart to HM King George V between 9 November 1911 and 1912.2 He was appointed Knight of Justice, Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem (K.J.St.J.)2

Raymond Asquith1

Raymond Asquith was born on 6 November 1878.1 He was the son of Herbert Henry Asquith, 1st Earl of Oxford and Asquith and Helen Kelsall Melland.1 He married Katharine Frances Horner, daughter of Sir John Francis Fortescue Horner and Frances Jane Graham, on 25 July 1907.3 He died on 15 September 1916 at age 37, killed in action.1
He was educated at Winchester College, Winchester, Hampshire, England.1 He was educated at Balliol College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England.1 He was admitted to Inner Temple in 1904 entitled to practise as a barrister.1 He gained the rank of Lieutenant in the Grenadier Guards.1 He fought in the First World War.1
