Herbert Henry Asquith, 1st Earl of Oxford and Asquith was born on 12 September 1852 at Croft House, Wind Mill Hill, Morley, Yorkshire, EnglandG.3 He was the son of Joseph Dixon Asquith and Emily Willans.4 He married, firstly, Helen Kelsall Melland, daughter of Dr. Frederick Melland and Ann Heap Kelsall, on 23 August 1877.5 He married, secondly, Emma Alice Margaret Tennant, daughter of Sir Charles Clow Tennant of The Glen, 1st Bt. and Emma Winsloe, on 10 May 1894.6 He died on 15 December 1928 at age 76.6
