Lady Helen Violet Asquith, Baroness Asquith of Yarnbury was born on 15 April 1887.1 She was the daughter of Herbert Henry Asquith, 1st Earl of Oxford and Asquith and Helen Kelsall Melland.1,3 She married Sir Maurice Bonham Carter, son of Henry Bonham-Carter and Sibella Charlotte Norman, on 30 November 1915.1 She died on 19 February 1969 at age 81.1
Lady Helen Violet Asquith, Baroness Asquith of Yarnbury usually went by her middle name of Violet.1 Her married name became Bonham Carter. She held the office of President of the Women’s Liberal Federation between 1923 and 1925.1 She was President of the Women’s Liberal Federation between 1939 and 1945.1 She was a Governor of the B.B.C. between 1941 and 1946.1 She was President of the Liberal Party Organization between 1947 and 1965.1 She was appointed Dame Commander, Order of the British Empire (D.B.E.) in 1953.1 She was created Baroness Asquith of Yarnbury, of Yarnbury in the County of Wiltshire [U.K. Life Peer] on 21 December 1964.1 She wrote the book Winston Churchill as I Knew Him, published 1965.4 She has an extensive biographical entry in the Dictionary of National Biography.5
