Edward Vernon-Harcourt was born on 10 October 1757.3 He was the son of George Venables-Vernon, 1st Lord Vernon, Baron of Kinderton and Martha Harcourt.4,3 He married Lady Anne Leveson-Gower, daughter of Granville Leveson-Gower, 1st Marquess of Stafford and Lady Louisa Egerton, on 5 February 1784.3 He died on 5 November 1847 at age 90.3
He was given the name of Edward Venables-Vernon at birth.3 He graduated with a Doctor of Civil Law (D.C.L.)3 He graduated with a Doctor of Divinity (D.D.)3 He held the office of Prebendary of Gloucestershire between 1785 and 1791.3 He held the office of Bishop of Carlisle between 1791 and 1807.3 He held the office of Archbishop of York between 1807 and 1847.1 He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.)3 On 15 January 1831 his name was legally changed to Edward Vernon-Harcourt by Royal Licence, after inheriting the Harcourt estates in 1830.3 In 1838 he was offered a revived peerage (presumably embodying the name Harcourt) by the former Prime Minister, the 2nd Earl Grey.3
