He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Whig) for Launceston from 1726 to 1727.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Whig) for St. Mawes between 1727 and 1741.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Whig) for Ripon between 1741 and 1747.1 He held the office of Vice Treasurer and Paymaster General [Ireland] between 1742 and 1744.1 He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) [Ireland] on 18 September 1742.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Whig) for County Durham between 1747 and 1753.1 He held the office of a Lord of the Treasury between 1749 and 1755.1 He held the office of Lord-Lieutenant of County Durham between 1753 and 1758.4 He succeeded as the 3rd Baron Barnard of Barnard’s Castle, in the Bishopric of Durham [E., 1698] on 27 April 1753.1 He was created 1st Viscount Barnard of Barnard’s Castle [Great Britain] on 3 April 1754.1 He was created 1st Earl of Darlington, co. Durham [Great Britain] on 3 April 1754.1 He held the office of Joint Paymaster of the Forces between 1755 and 1756.1
