He gained the rank of Captain in 1702 in the Scots Greys.1 He gained the rank of Major in 1709.1 He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel.1 He fought in the Battle of Sheriffmuir on 13 November 1715, where he played a leading role in defeating the Jacobite left wing.1 He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in 1717 in the 9th Foot.1 He held the office of Receiver General [Scotland] between 1725 and 1729.3 He held the office of Groom of the Bedchamber to King George II between 1727 and 1732.3 He was Colonel of the 31st Foot between 1728 and 1731.1 He was Colonel of the 8th Dragoons between 1731 and 1733.1 He succeeded as the 8th Lord Cathcart [S., c. 1452] on 19 October 1732.1 He was Colonel of the 7th Horse of King’s Carabiniers between 1733 and 1740.1 He held the office of Representative Peer [Scotland] between 1734 and 1740.1 He gained the rank of Brigadier-General in 1735.1 He held the office of Governor of Duncannon Fort between 1735 and 1740.3 He gained the rank of Major-General in 1739.1
