He succeeded as the 9th Lord Crichton of Sanquhar [S., 1488] on 29 June 1612.2 He was created 1st Lord of Sanquhar [Scotland] on 2 February 1622.1 He was created 1st Viscount of Air [Scotland] on 2 February 1622.1 He was created 1st Lord Crichton of Sanquhar and Cumnock [Scotland] on 12 June 1633, with a special remainder to his male heirs bearing the name Crichton.3 He was created 1st Earl of Dumfries [Scotland] on 12 June 1633, with a special remainder to his male heirs bearing the name Crichton.3 He was created 1st Viscount of Air [Scotland] on 12 June 1633, with a special remainder to his male heirs bearing the name Crichton.2

He held the office of Commissioner for the Administration of Justice in 1657.2 He was styled as Lord Stair [Scottish Law Lord] on 13 February 1661.2 He held the office of Lord of Session on 13 February 1661.2 He was created 1st Baronet Dalrymple, of Stair [Nova Scotia] on 2 June 1664.2 He held the office of President of the Court of Session between 1672 and 1681.2 In 1682 he retired to Holland after refusing to take the Test.2 In 1688 he returned with King William III, and was restored as President of the Court of Session.2 He was created 1st Viscount of Stair [Scotland] on 21 April 1690.2 He was created 1st Lord Glenluce and Stranraer [Scotland] on 21 April 1690.2 He has an extensive biographical entry in the Dictionary of National Biography.3
