William Maitland of Lethington was born circa 1528.3 He was the son of Sir Richard Maitland, Lord Lethington and Mary Cranston.3 He married, firstly, Janet Menteith.3 He married, secondly, Mary Fleming, daughter of Malcolm Fleming, 3rd Lord Fleming and Janet Stewart, on 6 January 1567.3 He died on 9 June 1573 at Leith, Midlothian, ScotlandG, a prisoner of the English.3

On 4 May 1482 he had a charter of the territorial Barony of Snaid, Dumfreis-shire.1 He held the office of Sheriff Depute of Peebles.1 He was appointed Knight before 15 February 1503/4.1 He succeeded as the 2nd Lord Hay of Yester [S., 1488] before 23 October 1508.1 In 1512 he acquired the rest of the Yester lands.1 He fought in the Battle of Flodden on 9 September 1513.1
