He was educated at Eton College, Windsor, Berkshire, EnglandG.1 He gained the rank of Captain in the Grenadier Guards.1 He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.)1 He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.)1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Dumfries-shire between 1874 and 1880.1 He succeeded as the 8th Earl of Annandale and Hartfell [S., 1662] on 11 July 1876, de jure.1 He succeeded as the 8th Lord Johnstone [S., 1662] on 11 July 1876, de jure.1 He held the office of Hereditary Steward of Annandale and Hereditary Keeper of Lochmaben Palace on 11 July 1876.1 In December 1876 he continued the 1876 petition for the Annandale titles.1 In 1877 he became mentally unstable.1 On 30 May 1879 his claim to the Annandale titles was disallowed.1

Alice Hope Johnstone1 
Alice Hope Johnstone was the daughter of John James Hope Johnstone and Alicia Anne Gordon.1 She married Sir Graham Graham-Montgomery, 3rd Bt., son of Sir James Montgomery, 2nd Bt. and Helen Graham, on 10 April 1845.1 She died on 16 December 1890.1
From 10 April 1845, her married name became Montgomery.1
