John Hamilton, 1st Marquess of Hamilton1 
He was styled as Earl of Arran between 1575 and 1599.4 In 1579 he was forfault as a faithful adherent of Queen Mary.4 He fought in the siege of Stirling Castle on 3 November 1585, and the King.4 He held the office of Governor of Dumbarton Castle in December 1585.4 On 10 December 1585 he was pardoned following the repeal (by Parliament) of the forfeiture against his family.4 He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) [Scotland] on 10 December 1585.4 He held the office of Lieutenant of the South of Scotland in 1589.4 He was created 1st Lord Aven [Scotland] on 17 April 1599, probably created at the same time as the Marquess of Hamilton, but possibly at the same time as the Earl of Arran i.e. 11 Aug 1603. However this title doesn’t appear to have been used after 1611.4 He was created 1st Marquess of Hamilton [Scotland] on 17 April 1599.5
