He was the son of Friedrich V von der Pfalz, King of Bohemia and Elizabeth Stuart, Princess of England.3 He married, firstly, Charlotte Landgräfin von Hessen-Kassel, daughter of Wilhelm V Landgraf von Hessen-Kassel and Amalie Elisabeth Gräfin von Hanau-Münzenberg, on 12 February 1650. He and Charlotte Landgräfin von Hessen-Kassel were divorced circa 1657. He married, secondly, Marie Susanne Louise Raugräfin von Degenfeld, daughter of Martin Christopher Baron von Degenfeld, on 6 January 1658 at Schwetzingen, GermanyG. He married, thirdly, Elisabeth Hollander von Bernau on 11 December 1679. He died on 28 August 1680 at age 62 at EdingerG.
He gained the title of Herzog von Bayern.4 He succeeded as the Kurfürst von der Pfalz in 1648.5
