He married Alexandra Friederike Wilhelmine von Holstein-Gottorp, Herzogin von Oldenburg, daughter of Constantine Friedrich Peter von Holstein-Gottorp, Herzog von Oldenburg and Therese Prinzessin von Nassau-Weilburg, on 5 February 1856 [25 Jan 1856 O.S.] at St. Petersburg, RussiaG.2 He died on 25 April 1891 at age 59 at Tsarskoie Selo, RussiaG.2
He gained the title of Grand Duke Nikolai Nikolaievich of Russia.3
