Elizabeth Sutherland, Countess of Sutherland1 
Her married name became Gordon. She succeeded as the 10th Countess of Sutherland [S., 1235] in July 1514.1 On 10 November 1527 she resigned the earldom in favour of her son, Alexander, but reserved teh life-rent for her herself and her husband.1

John Gordon, 11th Earl of Sutherland1 
John Gordon, 11th Earl of Sutherland also went by the nick-name of ‘the Good Earl John’.1 He succeeded as the 11th Earl of Sutherland [S., 1235] in September 1535.1 He fought in the Battle of Pinkie in 1547.1 He held the office of a Lord of the Articles in 1558.1 He held the office of a Lord of the Congregation before January 1559/60.1 In 1562 he was implicated in the Earl of Huntly’s rebellion, and his titles and estates forfeited.1 In 1565 he was pardoned.1 On 19 April 1567 the forfeiture was reversed.1 He has an extensive biographical entry in the Dictionary of National Biography.4

Alexander Gordon, 12th Earl of Sutherland1 
He succeeded as the 12th Earl of Sutherland [S., 1235] on 23 June 1567.1 On 18 March 1580/81 he made over the Earldom to his eldest son.1 On 23 March 1580/81 he obtained a regrant of the dignity from the Crown.1 In 1583 he swapped his Aboyne estate with the Earl of Huntly for that of Strathnaver.1 He held the office of Hereditary Sheriff of Inverness in 1589.1

John Gordon, 13th Earl of Sutherland1 
He succeeded as the 13th Earl of Sutherland [S., 1235] on 6 December 1594.1 He surrendered the Hereditary Shrievalty and Earldom of Sutherland.1 On 29 April 1601 he was regranted the Hereditary Shrievalty and Earldom of Sutherland with special remainder to his brothers Robert and Alexander, and then to Adam, third son of the 1st Marquess of Huntly.1

He succeeded as the 14th Earl of Sutherland [S., 1235] on 11 September 1615.1 He was educated at Dornoch School, Scotland.1 He was educated at Edinburgh University, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland.1 He was educated at St. Andrews University, St. Andrews, Fife, Scotland.1 In 1631 he was regranted the Hereditary Shrievalty of Sutherland.1 He was Covenanter in February 1637/38.1 He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) [Scotland] in 1641.1 He held the office of Lord Privy Seal [Scotland] from March 1648/49 to 1651.1 On 21 February 1661/62 he obtained a regrant of the Earldom.1

He held the office of Lord Privy Seal [Scotland] in 1656.1 He succeeded as the 15th Earl of Sutherland [S., 1235] on 14 October 1679.2 On 24 June 1681 he obtained a regrant of the Earldom, with special remainder to his son and in default to the heirs female of his son without division and their heirs male.1 He held the office of Commissioner of the Great Seal [Scotland] in 1689.1 He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) [Scotland] in 1689.1
