     Lt.-Gen. John Sutherland, 16th Earl of Sutherland was born on 3 March 1661.¹ He was the son of George Gordon, 15th Earl of Sutherland and Jean Wemyss.¹ He married, secondly, Catherine Tollemache, daughter of Sir Lionel Tollemache, 3rd Bt. and Elizabeth Murray, Countess of Dysart.² He married, firstly, Helen Cochrane, daughter of William Cochrane, Lord Cochrane and Lady Catherine Kennedy, on 28 April 1680.¹ He married by contract, thirdly, Frances Hodgson, daughter of Sir Thomas Hodgson and Anne Thorold, on 11 August 1727.¹ He died on 27 June 1733 at age 72.¹
     He was given the name of John Gordon at birth.¹ He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) [Scotland] in 1687.¹ In 1690 his name was legally changed to John Sutherland.¹ He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) [Scotland] in February 1689/90.¹ He gained the rank of Colonel between 1694 and 1697 in the Foot Regiment, Flanders.¹ He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) [Scotland] in February 1702/3.¹ He succeeded as the 16th Earl of Sutherland [S., 1235] on 4 March 1702/3.¹ He was a Commissioner for the Union of Scottish and English Parliaments in February 1705/6.¹ On 29 March 1706 he obtained a regrant of the Earldom, with special remainder to his son and in default to the heirs female of his son without division and their heirs male.¹ He was appointed Representative Peer [Scotland] in 1707/8.¹ He gained the rank of Lieutenant-General in 1715.¹ In 1715 he helped suppress the 1715 Uprising.¹ He held the office of Lord-Lieutenant of Caithness, Elgin, Nairn, Ross and Cromarty and Sutherland between 1715 and 1725.¹ He was appointed Representative Peer [Scotland] between 1715 and 1733.¹ He was appointed Knight, Order of the Thistle (K.T.) in 1716.¹ He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) in January 1720/21.¹ He has an extensive biographical entry in the Dictionary of National Biography.³
     

     William Sutherland, Lord Strathnaver was born before 19 December 1683.² He was the son of Lt.-Gen. John Sutherland, 16th Earl of Sutherland and Helen Cochrane.¹ He married Catherine Morison, daughter of William Morison, on 4 October 1705.¹ He died on 13 July 1720.¹
     He gained the rank of Colonel of Foot between 1702 and 1710.¹ He gained the title of Lord Strathnaver between 1703 and 1720.¹ He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Whig) for Wick Burghs from 1708 to 1709.¹ In 1715 he helped suppress the 1715 Uprising.¹

     John Sutherland, Lord Strathnaver was born in November 1706.¹ He was the son of William Sutherland, Lord Strathnaver and Catherine Morison.¹ He died circa 9 December 1720.¹ He was buried on 12 December 1720.¹
     He was styled as Lord Strathnaver.¹

     William Sutherland, 17th Earl of Sutherland was born on 2 October 1708.¹ He was the son of William Sutherland, Lord Strathnaver and Catherine Morison.¹ He married Lady Elizabeth Wemyss, daughter of David Wemyss, 4th Earl of Wemyss and Elizabeth St. Clair, on 2 April 1734.¹ He died on 7 December 1750 at age 42.¹
     He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Whig) for Sutherland between 1727 and 1732.¹ He succeeded as the 17th Earl of Sutherland [S., 1235] on 27 June 1733.¹ He was appointed Representative Peer [Scotland] between 1734 and 1747.¹ In 1745 he opposed teh 1745 Uprising, and barely escaped being taken prisoner when Jacobites occupied Dunrobin.¹ He fought in the Battle of Culloden in 1746.¹ In 1747 the Hereditary Shrievalty of Sutherland was abolished by Parliament, and he received £1,000 in compensation.¹

     Lady Elizabeth Wemyss was the daughter of David Wemyss, 4th Earl of Wemyss and Elizabeth St. Clair.¹ She married William Sutherland, 17th Earl of Sutherland, son of William Sutherland, Lord Strathnaver and Catherine Morison, on 2 April 1734.² She died on 20 February 1747.²
     Her married name became Sutherland.

     Catherine Morison was the daughter of William Morison.¹ She married William Sutherland, Lord Strathnaver, son of Lt.-Gen. John Sutherland, 16th Earl of Sutherland and Helen Cochrane, on 4 October 1705.¹ She died on 21 March 1765.¹
     Her married name became Sutherland.

     Helen Cochrane was the daughter of William Cochrane, Lord Cochrane and Lady Catherine Kennedy. She married Lt.-Gen. John Sutherland, 16th Earl of Sutherland, son of George Gordon, 15th Earl of Sutherland and Jean Wemyss, on 28 April 1680.¹
     Her married name became Gordon.

     Anna Elizabeth Jaeger was the daughter of C. Jaeger.¹ She married, firstly, H. Sladden before 1910.¹ She married, secondly, Major Hon. Francis William White, son of Luke White, 2nd Baron Annaly of Annaly and Rathcline and Emily Stuart, on 14 July 1910.¹ She died on 20 June 1956.¹
     From before 1910, her married name became Sladden.¹ From 14 July 1910, her married name became White.¹

     Lady Jean Drummond was born in 1609.¹ She was the daughter of James Drummond, 1st Earl of Perth and Lady Isabel Seton.² She married John Gordon, 14th Earl of Sutherland, son of John Gordon, 13th Earl of Sutherland and Agnes Elphinstone, on 14 February 1632.¹ She died on 29 December 1637.¹
     Her married name became Gordon.

     Sophie von Bayern was born in 1236. She was the daughter of Otto II Herzog von Bayern and Agnes von Braunschweig. She died in 1289.
