Edward Law, 1st Baron Ellenborough was born on 16 November 1750.2 He was the son of Rt. Rev. Edmund Law and Mary Christian.3 He married Anne Towry, daughter of Captain George Philip Towry, on 17 October 1789.2 He died on 13 December 1818 at age 68.2
He was educated at Charterhouse School, Godalming, Surrey, EnglandG.2 He graduated from Peterhouse College, Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, EnglandG, in 1771 with a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.)2 He graduated from Peterhouse College, Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, EnglandG, in 1774 with a Master of Arts (M.A.)2 He was admitted to Lincoln’s Inn in 1780 entitled to practise as a barrister.2 He was appointed King’s Counsel (K.C.) in 1787.2 He was appointed Fellow, Society of Antiquaries (F.S.A.) in 1798.2 He held the office of Attorney-General in 1801.2 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Newtown, Isle of Wight between 1801 and 1802.2 He was appointed Knight on 22 February 1801.2 He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) in 1802.2 He held the office of Lord Chief Justice of the King’s Bench between 1802 and 1818.2 He was created 1st Baron Ellenborough, of Ellenborough, co. Cumberland [U.K.] on 19 April 1802.2 He held the office of member of the ‘All Talents’ Cabinet between 1807 and 1807.2 He has an extensive biographical entry in the Dictionary of National Biography.4
