Sir John Strachey was born on 5 June 1823 at London, England.1 He was the son of Edward Strachey and Julia Woobine Kirkpatrick.1 He married Katherine Jane Batten, daughter of George H. M. Batten, on 8 October 1856.3 He died on 19 December 1907 at age 84 at London, England.1
He was appointed Companion, Order of the Indian Empire (C.I.E.)4 He was appointed Knight in 1872.3 He held the office of Lieutenant-Governor of the North-West Provinces between 1874 and 1876.3 He was appointed Knight Grand Commander, Order of the Star of India (G.C.S.I.) in 1878.3 He held the office of Member of the Secretary of State’s Council of India between 1885 and 1895.3 He wrote the book India, published 1888.3 He wrote the book Hastings and the Rohilla War, published 1892.3 He was with the Bengal Civil Service.1
