     Elizabeth Darcy is the daughter of Sir John Darcy, 1st Lord Darcy de Knayth and Lady Joan de Burgh.² She married, firstly, James Butler, 2nd Earl of Ormonde, son of James Butler, 1st Earl of Ormonde and Lady Eleanor de Bohun.² She married, secondly, Sir Robert de Hereford.²
     After her marriage, Elizabeth Darcy was styled as Countess of Ormonde. Her married name became Butler.

     Sir John Darcy, 1st Lord Darcy de Knayth was born after 15 June 1271.¹ He was the son of Sir Roger Darcy and Isabel d‘Aton.¹ He married, firstly, Emmeline Heron, daughter of Walter Heron.¹ He married, secondly, Lady Joan de Burgh, daughter of Richard de Burgh, 2nd Earl of Ulster and Margaret de Guînes, on 3 July 1329.¹ He died on 30 May 1347.¹
     In 1306 he was outlawed for felony.¹ On 19 May 1307 he was pardoned.¹ He held the office of Constable of Norham Castle in 1317.¹ He held the office of Sheriff of Nottinghamshire between 1319 and 1322.¹ He was Other between 1319 and 1322; Sheriff of Derbyshire.¹ He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Nottinghamshire in 1320.¹ He held the office of Sheriff of Lancashire in 1323.¹ He held the office of Justiciar of Ireland between 1323 and 1344.¹ He held the office of Sheriff of Yorkshire from 1327 to 1328.¹ He was created 1st Lord Darcy de Knayth [England by writ] on 27 January 1331/32.¹ He held the office of Steward of the King’s Household between 1337 and 1340.¹ He held the office of Chamberlain between 1341 and 1346.¹ He held the office of Constable of Nottingham Castle between 1344 and 1347.¹ He fought in the Battle of Crécy in 1346.¹ He lived at Knaith, Lincolnshire, England^G.¹ He lived at Kexby, Lincolnshire, England^G.¹ He lived at Upton, Lincolnshire, England^G.¹ He held the office of Constable of the Tower of London from 1346 to 1347.¹

     Thomas Butler, 10th Earl of Ormonde was born in 1531.¹ He was the son of James Butler, 9th Earl of Ormonde and Lady Joan FitzGerald.¹ He married, firstly, Hon. Elizabeth Berkeley, daughter of Thomas Berkeley, 6th Lord Berkeley and Anne Savage, circa 1559.³ He married, secondly, Hon. Elizabeth Sheffield, daughter of John Sheffield, 2nd Baron Sheffield and Hon. Douglas Howard, circa 1582.¹ He married, thirdly, Hon. Helen Barry, daughter of David Barry, 5th Viscount Barry and Ellen Roche, in June 1601.^4,1 He died on 22 November 1614.¹ He was buried at St. Canice Cathedral, Kilkenny, County Kilkenny, Ireland^G.⁵
     Thomas Butler, 10th Earl of Ormonde also went by the nick-name of ‘Tom Duffe’.¹ He succeeded as the 2nd Viscount Thurles [I., 1536] on 28 October 1546.¹ He succeeded as the 10th Earl of Ormonde [I., 1328] on 28 October 1546.¹ He succeeded as the 3rd Earl of Ossory [I., 1528] on 28 October 1546.¹ He was appointed Knight in February 1546/47.¹ He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) [Ireland] in March 1557/58.¹ He held the office of Treasurer of Ireland between 1559 and 1614.¹ He held the office of Lieutenant of County Tipperary in 1575.¹ He held the office of Lieutenant of County Kilkenny in 1575.¹ He was Lord General of the forces in Munster in January 1582/83.¹ He was appointed Knight, Order of the Garter (K.G.) in 1588.¹ He was General of the forces in Leinster between 1594 and 1596.¹ He was Lieutenant-General of the all forces in Ireland in 1597.¹ In 1600 he helped to suppress Tyson’s Rising.¹ Between April 1600 and June 1600 he was held captive by Owny MacRory O’More.¹ He held the office of Vice-Admiral of Leinster in 1602.¹ He has an extensive biographical entry in the Dictionary of National Biography.⁶
     

     James Butler, 9th Earl of Ormonde was born before 20 July 1504.¹ He was the son of Piers Butler, 8th Earl of Ormonde and Lady Margaret FitzGerald.¹ He married Lady Joan FitzGerald, daughter of James FitzMaurice FitzGerald, 10th Earl of Desmond, before 21 December 1532.¹ He died on 28 October 1546 at London, England^G, poisoned along with his steward and 16 servants (possibly accidentally or malicious is not known).¹ He was buried at St. Canice Cathedral, Kilkenny, County Kilkenny, Ireland^G.²
     James Butler, 9th Earl of Ormonde also went by the nick-name of ‘the Lame’.¹ He held the office of Esquire of the Body to King Henry VIII in 1527.¹ He held the office of Lord High Treasurer [Ireland] between 1532 and 1546.¹ He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) [Ireland] in 1535.¹ He held the office of Admiral of Ireland in 1535.¹ Between 1535 and 1539 he helped suppress uprisings in Ireland.¹ He was created 1st Viscount Thurles [Ireland] on 2 January 1535/36.¹ He held the office of Constable of Kilkea Castle in 1537.¹ He held the office of Constable of Carlow Castle in 1537.¹ He succeeded as the 9th Earl of Ormonde [I., 1328] on 26 August 1539.¹ He succeeded as the 2nd Earl of Ossory [I., 1528] on 26 August 1539.¹ He gained the rank of General in 1545 in the Irish forces for service in Scotland.¹

     Lady Joan FitzGerald was the daughter of James FitzMaurice FitzGerald, 10th Earl of Desmond. She married, firstly, James Butler, 9th Earl of Ormonde, son of Piers Butler, 8th Earl of Ormonde and Lady Margaret FitzGerald, before 21 December 1532.¹ She married, secondly, Sir Francis Bryan before 28 August 1548.¹ She married, thirdly, Gerald FitzJames FitzGerald, 14th Earl of Desmond, son of James FitzJohn FitzGerald, 13th Earl of Desmond and Móre O’Carroll, circa 1551.¹
     From before 21 December 1532, her married name became Butler. After her marriage, Lady Joan FitzGerald was styled as Viscountess Thurles on 2 January 1535/36. After her marriage, Lady Joan FitzGerald was styled as Countess of Ormonde on 26 August 1539. From before 28 August 1548, her married name became Bryan.¹

     James FitzMaurice FitzGerald, 10th Earl of Desmond was the son of Maurice FitzThomas FitzGerald, 9th Earl of Desmond.¹ He married Amy Mac-I-Brien-Ara, daughter of Turlogh Mac-I-Brien-Ara.² He died on 18 June 1529 at Dingle, Lancashire, England^G.² He was buried at Tralee, County Kerry, Ireland^G.
     He gained the title of 10th Earl of Desmond.

     Hon. John Butler was the son of Piers Butler, 8th Earl of Ormonde and Lady Margaret FitzGerald.¹ He married Katherine MacCartie, daughter of Cormac MacCartie, The MacCartie Reagh.² He died on 10 May 1570.¹
     On 26 May 1544 his father granted him lands by deed.¹ He lived at Kilcash, County Tipperary, Ireland^G.¹

     Katherine MacCartie is the daughter of Cormac MacCartie, The MacCartie Reagh.¹ She married, firstly, Hon. John Butler, son of Piers Butler, 8th Earl of Ormonde and Lady Margaret FitzGerald.¹ She married, secondly, Theobald ‘na Sidheáin’ Butler, son of John Butler and Ellen FitzGerald, after 1570.¹
     Her married name became Butler.
