He underwent a spiritual conversion.1 He was a failed hatter at Manchester, Lancashire, England.1 Circa 1779 he inherited the estates of his cousin, Rev. Sir John Mosley, 3rd Bt.1 He was created 1st Baronet Mosley [Great Britain] on 8 June 1781.1 He held the office of High Sheriff of Lancashire in 1786.1

He succeeded as the 3rd Baron Sheffield, of Butterwick, co. Lincoln [E., 1547] on 10 December 1568.2 He was educated at Christ Church, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England.2 In 1588 he served in the English fleet against the Spanish Armada.2 He was appointed Knight in 1588.2 He was appointed Knight, Order of the Garter (K.G.) in 1593.2 He was Governor of Brill, Low Countries between January 1598 and July 1598, absentee.2 He held the office of Lord President of the Councl in the North between 1603 and 1619.2 He held the office of Lord-Lieutenant of Yorkshire between 1603 and 1619.2 He held the office of Vice-Admiral of Yorkshire in 1616.2 He was created 1st Earl of Mulgrave, co. York [England] on 5 February 1625/26.2
