James Stuart, 2nd Lord Doune1 
James Stuart, 2nd Lord Doune also went by the nick-name of ‘the Bonny Earl’. After his marriage, James Stuart, 2nd Lord Doune was styled as Earl of Moray on 23 January 1580/81, suo uxoris.2 He succeeded as the 2nd Lord Doune [S., 1581] on 20 July 1590.2 On 7 February 1591/92 he was attacked at Donibristle, which was set on fire by George, 6th Earl of Huntly, and was spotted from the flames on a silken tassel that had caught fire in his cap.2

He held the office of Ambassador to France in 1560, jointly.2 He was appointed Knight in 1565.2 He was Commendator of St. Colme’s Inch.2 He held the office of Constable of Doune Castle.2 He was created 1st Lord Doune [Scotland] on 24 November 1581, with special remainder to his heirs male whatsoever.2 He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.)2 He held the office of Extraordinary Lord of Session between 1584 and 1586.2

He succeeded as the 3rd Lord Strathdearn [S., 1563] on 18 November 1591.1 He succeeded as the 3rd Earl of Moray [S., 1562] on 18 November 1591.1 He succeeded as the 3rd Lord Abernethy [S., 1562] on 18 November 1591.1 He succeeded as the 3rd Lord Doune [S., 1581] on 7 February 1591/92.1 In 1599 the 1st Earl of Moray’s charter of 1566 was ratified in his favour.1 On 17 April 1611 he resigned his titles and was granted a new charter in favour of himself and his heirs male of his body, with special remainder to his brother Francis.1 He was created 1st Lord Saint Colme [Scotland] on 26 February 1619/20.1
