Alexander Stuart, 5th Earl of Moray was baptised on 8 May 1634.1 He was the son of James Stuart, 4th Earl of Moray and Lady Margaret Home.1 He married Emilia Balfour, daughter of Sir William Balfour of Pitcullo and Isabella van Weede, circa 1658.1 He died on 1 November 1700 at age 66.1
He succeeded as the 5th Lord Doune [S., 1581] on 4 March 1653.1 He succeeded as the 3rd Lord Saint Colme [S., 1620] on 4 March 1653.1 He gained the title of 5th Earl of Moray [S., 1562] on 4 March 1653.1 He succeeded as the 5th Lord Abernethy [S., 1562] on 4 March 1653.1 He succeeded as the 5th Lord Strathdearn [S., 1563] on 4 March 1653.1 In 1654 he was fined £3,500 as a Royalist.1 He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) in February 1660/61.1 He held the office of Lord Justice General [Scotland] in 1675/76.1 He held the office of a Lord of Treasury in 1678.1 In 1678 he raised a regiment of Highlanders.1 He held the office of Secretary of State in 1680.1 He held the office of Extraordinary Lord of Session in 1680.1 He held the office of Lord High Commissioner [Scotland] in 1686.1 He was appointed Knight, Order of the Thistle (K.T.) in 1687.1 In 1688 he was deprived of his offices.1 In 1690 he was imprisoned as a suspected Jacobite.1
