He was educated at Bradfield College, Bradfield, Reading, Berkshire, EnglandG.1 He was an insurance broker and Lloyd’s underwriter in 1926.2 He was educated at Hertford College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, EnglandG.2 In 1931 He fought for Hemsworth in the general election (as a Conservative.)2 In 1935 He fought for the Isle of Ely in the general election (as a Conservative.)2 He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Commander in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve.1 He fought in the Second World War in 1942, where he was mentioned in despatches three times.2 He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross (D.S.C.) in 1941 and bar (1942.)2 He succeeded as the 2nd Baronet Garthwaite, of Durham [U.K., 1919] on 21 June 1956.4

He was a shipowner and sugar plante.2 He helped the Admiralty with shipping between Canada and France during WWI and WWII (voluntarily building a fleet of minesweepers abroad.)2 He was awarded the Chevalier, Crown of Belgium.2 He was created 1st Baronet Garthwaite, of Durham [U.K.] on 19 May 1919.3
