     Anthony William Garthwaite was born on 10 November 1917.¹ He was the son of Sir William Garthwaite, 1st Bt. and Janet Rodrigues.² He married Hon. Waveney Mancroft Samuel, daughter of Sir Arthur Samuel, 1st Baron Mancroft and Phoebe Fletcher, on 1 December 1950.¹ He died on 4 October 1972 at age 54.¹
     He was educated at Harrow School, Harrow, London, England^G.¹ He graduated from New College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England^G, with a Master of Arts (M.A.)¹ He gained the rank of officer in the Scots Guards, General List and Leicestershire Regiment.¹ He fought in the Second World War between 1939 and 1942, when he was invalided.¹ He was Vice-Consul to Kansas City in 1942.¹ He was British Naval Liaison Office in 1944 at San Pedro, California, U.S.A.^G.¹

     Sir Arthur Samuel, 1st Baron Mancroft was born on 6 December 1872.² He was the son of Benjamin Samuel and Rosetta Haldinstein.² He married Phoebe Fletcher, daughter of George Alfred Chune Fletcher, on 19 December 1912.² He died on 17 August 1942 at age 69.²
     He was educated at King Edward VI School, Norwich, Norfolk, England^G.² He held the office of Lord Mayor of Norwich between 1912 and 1913.² He was Assistant Director, Army Contracts (Munitions), War Office between 1914 and 1915.² He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.)
