Lt.-Gen. Patrick Ruthven, 1st and last Earl of Brentford1 
He gained the rank of Captain in 1615 in the Swedish Army.1 He was appointed Knight on 23 September 1627 by Gustavus Adolphus, King of Sweden.1 He gained the rank of Colonel in 1630.1 He held the office of Governor of Ulm in 1632.1 He gained the rank of Major-General in 1632.1 He was created Graf von Kirchberg [Sweden] in April 1632, by Gustavus Adolphus, King of Sweden.1 He fought in the Battle of Doemitz in 1635.2 He gained the rank of Battle of Goldberg.2 He fought in the Battle of Lutzen.2 He gained the rank of Lieutenant-General and Colonel of Horse in 1635.1 He gained the rank of Battle of Koesen.2 He was created 1st Lord Ruthven of Ettrick [Scotland] in 1639.1 He held the office of Muster Master-General [Scotland] in 1639.1 He held the office of Governor of Edinburgh Castle between 1639 and 19 September 1640, which he was forced to surrender.1 He fought in the Siege of Edinburgh in 1639/40.3 He was created 1st Earl of Forth [Scotland] on 27 May 1642.1 He was Marshal-General and Commander-in-Chief of the Royalist Army in 1642.2 He fought in the Battle of Edgehill in October 1642, where he had the chief command.1 He fought in the Battle of Brentford on 15 November 1642, where he defeated the Parliamentarian forces.1 He held the office of Councillor and Lord Chamberlain in 1644, to the Prince of Wales.1 He was created 1st Earl of Brentford, co. Middlesex [England] on 27 May 1644.1 He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) on 30 April 1645.1 He held the office of Envoy to Stockholm in 1649.1 He held the office of Lord Chamberlain to King Charles II in February 1648/49, when in exile.1 His last will was dated 8 August 1649.3
On his death, all of his honours became extinct.1 Lord Clarendon wrote, “he had been without doubt a very good officer and great experience and was still a man of unquestionable courage and integrity; yet he was now (1644) much decayed in his parts and with the long continued custom of immoderate drinking, dozed in his understanding, which had been never quick and vigorous; he having been always illiterate to the greatest degree that can be imagined.”1
