He was appointed Knight, Order of the Garter (K.G.) in 1509.2 He had large monastic grants of land in Yorkshire.2 He held the office of Sheriff of Yorkshire in 1522.2 He succeeded as the 11th Lord Clifford [E., 1299] on 23 April 1523.1 He held the office of Warden of the West Marches.2 He held the office of Captain of Carlisle between 1525 and 1528.2 He was created 1st Earl of Cumberland [England] on 18 June 1525.1 He held the office of Constable and Steward of Knaresborough.2 He held the office of Constable and Steward of Penrith.2 He held the office of Warden of the West Marches between 1534 and 1542.2 In 1536 he successfully defended Skipton Castle against the Pilgrimage of Grace.2 He has an extensive biographical entry in the Dictionary of National Biography.3

Lady Lucy Percy1

Lady Lucy Percy was born circa 1600.3 She was the daughter of Henry Percy, 3rd Earl of Northumberland and Lady Dorothy Devereux.1 She married James Hay, 1st Earl of Carlisle, son of Sir James Hay and Margaret Murray, on 6 November 1617, in the King’s presence, but without her father’s consent.1 She died on 5 November 1660 at Little Salisbury House, The Strand, London, EnglandG, suddenly from apoplexy, without surviving issue.3,4 She was buried on 21 November 1660 at Petworth, Sussex, EnglandG.3,5 She died intestate and her estate was administered on 20 December 1660.3
After her marriage, Lady Lucy Percy was styled as Baroness Hay of Sawley on 6 November 1617. From 6 November 1617, her married name became Hay. After her marriage, Lady Lucy Percy was styled as Viscountess Doncaster on 5 July 1618. After her marriage, Lady Lucy Percy was styled as Countess of Carlisle on 13 September 1622.1 Witty and beautiful, she was the friend of Stafford, and, after his fall, played an intricate game of intrigue, which in 1649 brought her for some months to the Tower.
