Sir John Wallace1 
James Douglas, 4th Earl of Morton1 

James Douglas, 4th Earl of Morton was born circa 1516.1 He was the son of Sir George Douglas and Elizabeth Douglas.1 He married Lady Elizabeth Douglas, daughter of James Douglas, 3rd Earl of Morton and Catherine Stewart, in 1543.1 He died on 2 June 1581, beheaded.1
He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) [Scotland] in 1552.3 He held the office of Lord Chancellor [Scotland] from 1562/63 to 1566.3 He succeeded as the 4th Earl of Morton [S., 1458] on 2 June 1564.1 On 9 March 1566 he played a leading role in the murder of Mary Queen of Scots secretary, Rizzio, and was forced to flee the country for a short while.3 He was a Commissioner for the Queen’s renunciation of the throne and King James VI’s Coronation in 1567.3 He held the office of Lord Chancellor [Scotland] between 1567 and 1573.3 He fought in the Battle of Langside in 1568, where he commanded King James VI’s forces.3 He held the office of Great Admiral of Scotland between 1570 and 1580.3 He held the office of Admiral of Scotland in February 1569/70.3 He held the office of Regent of Scotland from 1572 to 8 March 1577/78.3 He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) [Scotland] in 1578.3 He was tried for high treason for his involvement in Darnley’s assassination, found guilty, and his estates and honours were forfeited and he was sentenced to death.3 He has an extensive biographical entry in the Dictionary of National Biography.4
On 29 January 1585/86 his attainder was revoked and his Earldom reverted to the heir of entail.3
