Edward Courtenay, 1st Earl of Devon was born in 1526.1 He was the son of Sir Henry Courtenay, 1st and last Marquess of Exeter and Gertrude Blount.1 He died on 18 September 1556 at Padua, ItalyG, unmarried.1
From 1538 to 3 August 1553 at Tower of London, The City, London, EnglandG, he was a prisoner until released by Queen Mary I.1 He was appointed Knight, Order of the Bath (K.B.) in 1553.1 He was created 1st Earl of Devon [England] on 3 September 1553.1 On 10 October 1553 by Act of Parliament, he was restored in blood, but not to his forbear’s honours.1 He was allegedly involved in Sir Thomas Wyatt’s conspiracy against Queen Mary.1 From 15 March 1553/54 to 25 May 1554 at Tower of London, The City, London, EnglandG, he was again imprisoned.1 From 25 May 1554 to 6 April 1555 at Fotheringay Castle, Northamptonshire, EnglandG, he was imprisoned.1 He has an extensive biographical entry in the Dictionary of National Biography.3
