Henry Brougham Loch, 1st Baron Loch 

Henry Brougham Loch, 1st Baron Loch was born on 23 May 1827.2 He was the son of James Loch and Ann Orr.1 He married Elizabeth Villiers, daughter of Hon. Edward Ernest Villiers and Hon. Elizabeth Charlotte Liddell, on 7 May 1862.3 He died on 20 June 1900 at age 73.2
He gained the rank of officer between 1840 and 1842 in the Royal Navy.2 He gained the rank of officer in 1844 in the 3rd Bengal Cavalry.2 He was Aide-de-Camp to Lord Gough, Commander-in-Chief of India in 1846.2 He gained the rank of Adjutant in 1850 in the Skinner’s Horse.2 He fought in the Crimean War in 1854.2 He was attached to the Earl of Elgin’s special emabssies to China and Japan, and was taken prisoner by teh Chinese in 1860, and then brought the Treaty of Tientsin to England between 1857 and 1860.2 He was Private Secretary to Sir George Grey, Home Secretary in 1861.2 He held the office of Lieutenant-Governor of the Isle of Man between 1863 and 1882.2 He was appointed Knight Grand Cross, Order of St. Michael and St. George (G.C.M.G.)3 He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.)3 He was appointed Knight Grand Cross, Order of the Bath (G.C.B.)3 He was Commissioner of H.M.’s Woods, Forests and Land REvenue between 1882 and 1884.2 He held the office of Governor of Victoria between 1884 and 1889.2 He held the office of Governor of the Cape of Good Hope between 1889 and 1895.2 He held the office of High Commissioner of the South Africa between 1889 and 1895.2 He was created 1st Baron Loch, of Drylaw, Midlothian [U.K.] on 18 July 1895.2 He raised Loch’s Horse for service in the Boer War.4
