Sir John Riddell of that Ilk, 1st Bt. was the son of Andrew Riddell of Riddell and Haining and unknown daughter Pringle.2 He married, firstly, Agnes Murray, daughter of Sir John Murray of Blackbarony and Margaret Hamilton, before 30 September 1602.2,3 He married, secondly, Jean Anstruther, daughter of Sir James Anstruther of Anstruther and Jean Scott, before July 1630.3 He died in March 1632.3
He had a remainder to heirs male whatsoever and with a grant of lands called ‘the Barony and Regality of New Riddell.1‘ He was appointed Knight.3 He was created 1st Baronet Riddell, of Riddell, co. Roxburgh [Nova Scotia] on 14 March 1628.1
