John Hay, 4th Marquess of Tweedale was born circa 1695.1 He was the son of Charles Hay, 3rd Marquess of Tweeddale and Lady Susanna Hamilton.1 He married Lady Frances Carteret, daughter of John Carteret, 2nd Earl Granville and Frances Worsley, on 24 May 1748.1 He died on 9 December 1762.1
He succeeded as the 5th Earl of Tweeddale [S., 1646] on 17 December 1715.1 He succeeded as the 12th Lord Hay of Yester [S., 1488] on 17 December 1715.1 He succeeded as the 4th Marquess of Tweeddale [S., 1694] on 17 December 1715.1 He succeeded as the 4th Earl of Gifford [S., 1694] on 17 December 1715.1 He succeeded as the 4th Viscount of Walden [S., 1694] on 17 December 1715.1 He held the office of Burgess of Glasgow in 1721.1 He held the office of Extraordinary Lord of Sessions from March 1720/21 to 1762.1 He held the office of Representative Peer [Scotland] between 1722 and 1734.1 He was Governor of the Bank of Scotland in 1742.1 He held the office of Principal Secretary of State [Scotland] between 1742 and 1746.1 He held the office of Representative Peer [Scotland] between 1742 and 1762.1 He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) in February 1741/42.1 He held the office of Burgess of Edinburgh in 1753.1 He held the office of Lord Justice-General from 1761 to 1762.1
