Laurence Oliphant1 

Laurence Oliphant was born in 1829.1 He was the son of Sir Anthony Oliphant and Maria Campbell.3 He married Alice Styleman le Strange, daughter of Henry L’Estrange Styleman le Strange and Jamesina Joyce Ellen Stewart, on 8 June 1872.1 He died on 24 December 1888, without issue.1
He was admitted to Lincoln’s Inn entitled to practise as a barrister.1 He was admitted to Advocate, Scottish Bar.1 He was Private Secretary to Lord Elgin, Governor-General of Canada.1 He was Civil Secretary and Superintendent of Indian Affairs.1 He was Secretary of Embassy in China between 1859 and 1860.1 He was Secretary of Legation in Japan between 1861 and 1862.1 He was Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Stirling Burghs between 1865 and 1868.1 He was Times correspondent during the Franco-Prussian War.1 He wrote the book Piccadilly, Traits and Travesties, Altiora Peto.1
