He was educated at Trinity Church, Dublin, County Dublin, IrelandG.2 He was admitted to Lincoln’s Inn in 1745.1 He lived at Castle Archdale, County Fermanagh, IrelandG.1 He gained the rank of Colonel in 1756 in the Fermanagh Militia Dragoons.2 He held the office of the Governor of County Fermanagh in 1756.1 He gained the rank of Captain in 1760 in the Sir Ralph Gore’s Regiment of Foot.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for County Fermanagh between 1761 and 1800.1 In 1773 he began building the present family seat.2 He held the office of High Sheriff of County Fermanagh in 1773.1 He lived at Trillick, County Tyrone, IrelandG, to which with the remaining Mervyn property in Tyrone, he succeeded in 1776.1 He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for Counties Fermanagh, Tyrone and Donegal, and Queen’s County.1 In 1782 he was a signatory to the Dungannon Resolutions.2 He was a member of the Committee of Ulster Volunteers.2 He was in opposition to Catholic Emancipation.2 He refused a peerage, the Barony of Rossmore, rather than support the Irish Union.2
