Ralph Assheton, 1st Baron Clitheroe1 
Ralph Assheton, 1st Baron Clitheroe was born on 24 February 1901.3 He was the son of Sir Ralph Cockayne Assheton, 1st Bt. and Mildred Estelle Sybella Master.3 He married Hon. Sylvia Benita Frances Hotham, daughter of Frederick William Hotham, 6th Baron Hotham of South Dalton and Eliza Benita Sanders, on 24 January 1924.3 He died in 1984.3
He was educated at Eton College, Windsor, Berkshire, EnglandG.3 He graduated from Christ Church, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, EnglandG, in 1923 with a Master of Arts (M.A.)3 He was admitted to Inner Temple in 1925 entitled to practise as a barrister.3 He was a member of the London Stock Exchange between 1927 and 1939.3 He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for Lancashire in 1934.3 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Conservative) for Rushcliffe between 1934 and 1945.3 He held the office of Parliamentary Private Secretary between 1936 and 1938, to the First Commissioner of Works and the Secretary of State, Colonies.3 He held the office of Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Labour between 1939 and 1942.3 He held the office of Finance Secretary of the Treasury between 1942 and 1945.3 He held the office of Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Supply between February 1942 and December 1942.3 He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) in 1944.3 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Conservative) for the City of London between 1945 and 1950.3 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Conservative) for Blackburn West between 1950 and 1955.3 He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) of Lancashire in 1955.3 He was created 1st Baron Clitheroe, of Downham, co. Lancaster [U.K.] on 20 June 1955.3 He succeeded as the 2nd Baronet Assheton, of Downham, co. Lancaster [U.K., 1945] on 21 September 1955.3 He held the office of Vice-Lord-Lieutenant of Lancashire between 1956 and 1970.3 He held the office of High Steward of Westminster in 1962.3 He was appointed Fellow, Society of Antiquaries (F.S.A.)3 He held the office of Lord-Lieutenant of Lancashire between 1970 and 1976.3 He was appointed Knight, Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem (K.St.J.) in 1972.3 He was appointed Knight Commander, Royal Victorian Order (K.C.V.O.) in 1977.3 He has an extensive biographical entry in the Dictionary of National Biography.4
