James Hamilton, 1st Earl of Clanbrassill1 
James Hamilton, 1st Earl of Clanbrassill was the son of James Hamilton, 1st Viscount Claneboye and Jane Philipps.1 He married Lady Anne Carey, daughter of Henry Carey, 2nd Earl of Monmouth and Lady Martha Cranfield, circa 23 September 1641 at Rickmansworth, Hertfordshire, EnglandG.1 He died on 20 June 1659.1 He was buried on 29 July 1659 at Bangor, County Down, Ireland.1 His will was proven (by probate) on 15 June 1661.1
He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for County Down from 1634 to 1635.1 He raised a regiment of Foot and a troop of Horse for the Royal cause.1 He succeeded as the 2nd Viscount Claneboye, co. Down [I., 1622] in 1644.1 He was created 1st Earl of Clanbrassill, co. Armagh [Ireland] on 7 June 1647.1 In 1649 he submitted to the Commonwealth.1 On 1 March 1654 he was a Compounder for £9,435.1 His last will was dated 8 June 1659.

Lady Anne Carey was the daughter of Henry Carey, 2nd Earl of Monmouth and Lady Martha Cranfield.1 She married, firstly, James Hamilton, 1st Earl of Clanbrassill, son of James Hamilton, 1st Viscount Claneboye and Jane Philipps, circa 23 September 1641 at Rickmansworth, Hertfordshire, EnglandG.1 She married, secondly, Sir Robert Maxwell of Orchardtoun, 2nd Bt., son of Sir Robert Maxwell of Orchardtoun, 1st Bt. and Anne Maclellan, in 1668.1 She died on 15 January 1688/89.1
From circa 23 September 1641, her married name became Hamilton.1 After her marriage, Lady Anne Carey was styled as Viscountess Claneboye in 1644. After her marriage, Lady Anne Carey was styled as Countess of Clanbrassill on 7 June 1647. From 1668, her married name became Maxwell.1
