Lt.-Col. Hon. James Frederick Arthur Smith was born on 27 January 1906.2 He was the son of William Frederick Danvers Smith, 2nd Viscount Hambleden and Lady Esther Georgiana Caroline Gore.3 He died on 24 September 1980 at age 74 at London, England.1
He was educated at Eton College, Windsor, Berkshire, EnglandG.2 He was educated at Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, EnglandG.2 He fought in the Second World War, where he was mentioned in despatches.2 He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in the General List.2 He was Assistant Military Secretary to Commander 2nd Army between 1944 and 1945.2 He was appointed Officer, Order of the British Empire (O.B.E.) in 1945.2 He was director of W. H. Smith & Son (Hldgs) and W. H. Smith & Son Ltd.2
