Lt.-Col. William Lowther, 1st Earl of Lonsdale was born on 29 December 1757.3 He was the son of Rev. Sir William Lowther, 1st Bt. and Anne Zouch.3 He married Lady Augusta Fane, daughter of John Fane, 9th Earl of Westmorland and Augusta Bertie, on 12 July 1781.4 He died on 19 March 1844 at age 86.3
He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Tory) for Carlisle between 1780 and 1784.3 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Tory) for Cumberland between 1784 and 1790.3 He succeeded as the 2nd Baronet Lowther [G.B., 1764] on 15 June 1788.3 He gained the rank of Lieutenant in 1794.3 He gained the rank of Ensign in 1794 in the 80th Foot.3 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.)
