Gerald Humphrey Legge, 9th Earl of Dartmouth was born on 26 April 1924.1 He was the son of Humphrey Legge, 8th Earl of Dartmouth and Roma Ernestine Horlick.1 He married, firstly, Raine McCorquodale, daughter of Captain Alexander George McCorquodale and Mary Barbara Hamilton Cartland, on 21 July 1948.3 He and Raine McCorquodale were divorced in 1976.4 He married, secondly, Gwendoline May Seguin, daughter of Charles René Seguin, on 1 October 1980.4 He died on 14 December 1997 at age 73.4
He was educated at Eton College, Windsor, Berkshire, EnglandG.1 He gained the rank of Captain in the Coldstream Guards.1 He fought in the Second World War between 1942 and 1945, where he was mentioned in despatches.1 He was appointed Fellow, Institute of Chartered Accountants (F.C.A.) in 1951.1 He was a director of Rea Brothers between 1958 and 1989.1 He succeeded as the 9th Viscount Lewisham, of co. Kent [G.B., 1711] on 16 October 1962.1 He succeeded as the 9th Earl of Dartmouth [G.B., 1711] on 16 October 1962.1 He succeeded as the 10th Baron Dartmouth, of Dartmouth, Devon [E., 1682] on 16 October 1962.1 He was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Law (LL.D.) by Dartmouth College, Hanover, New Hampshire, U.S.A.G, in 1969.4 He was awarded the Grand Officer, Order of Cruzeiro Do Sul of Brazil in 1994.4
