He gained the rank of Commander in the Royal Navy.1 He fought in the First World War, where he was mentioned in despatches.1 He was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (D.S.O.) in 1919.1 He was awarded the King’s Police Medal (K.P.M.)1 He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) of Staffordshire between 1927 and 1939.1 He was Assistant Chief Constable of Staffordshire between 1928 and 1932.1 He was Chief Constable of Berkshire between 1932 and 1953.1 He was awarded the Grand Officer, Order of Orange-Nassau of the Netherlands.1 He was appointed Commander, Royal Victorian Order (C.V.O.) in 1947.1 He succeeded as the 9th Baron Dartmouth, of Dartmouth, Devon [E., 1682] on 28 February 1958.1 He succeeded as the 8th Viscount Lewisham, of co. Kent [G.B., 1711] on 28 February 1958.1 He succeeded as the 8th Earl of Dartmouth [G.B., 1711] on 28 February 1958.1

Major James Bertram Falkner Cartland was born circa 1876 at King’s Norton, Staffordshire, EnglandG.2 He was the son of James Cartland and Flora Falkner. He married Mary Hamilton Scobell, daughter of Sanford George Treweeke Scobell and Edith Palairet, in July 1900. He died on 27 May 1918, killed in action.2

Mary Hamilton Scobell 
Mary Hamilton Scobell was born on 5 September 1877. She was the daughter of Sanford George Treweeke Scobell and Edith Palairet. She married Major James Bertram Falkner Cartland, son of James Cartland and Flora Falkner, in July 1900. She died on 21 February 1976 at age 98 at Littlewood House, Poolbrook, Malvern, Worcestershire, England.2
Mary Hamilton Scobell also went by the nick-name of Polly.
