Mary Barbara Hamilton Cartland was born on 9 July 1901. She was the daughter of Major James Bertram Falkner Cartland and Mary Hamilton Scobell.1 She married, firstly, Captain Alexander George McCorquodale, son of Alexander Cowan McCorquodale and Maggie Janet Cox, on 23 April 1927.1 She and Captain Alexander George McCorquodale were divorced in 1932.1 She married, secondly, Hugh McCorquodale, son of Harold McCorquodale and Grace Granville, on 28 December 1936 at Guildhall, London, EnglandG.1 She died on 21 May 2000 at age 98.3
Mary Barbara Hamilton Cartland usually went by her middle name of Barbara.1 From 23 April 1927, her married name became McCorquodale. She was appointed Commander, Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem (C.St.J.)1 She was an author of romance novels. She was appointed Dame Commander, Order of the British Empire (D.B.E.)4 She wrote the book The Love Pirate, published 1977.5
