     Charles Barclay-Maitland, 12th Earl of Lauderdale was born on 29 September 1822.¹ He was the son of Reverend Charles Barclay-Maitland and Anne Knott.¹ He died on 13 August 1884 at age 61 at Braidshaw Rigg Moor, Lauder, Berwickshire, Scotland^G, after being struck by lightning, unmarried.¹
     He succeeded as the 13th Lord Maitland of Thirlestane [S., 1590] on 1 September 1878.¹ He succeeded as the 8th Baronet Maitland [N.S., 1680] on 1 September 1878.¹ He succeeded as the 12th Viscount of Lauderdale [S., 1616] on 1 September 1878.¹ He succeeded as the 12th Earl of Lauderdale [S., 1624] on 1 September 1878.¹ He succeeded as the 12th Viscount Maitland [S., 1624] on 1 September 1878.¹ He succeeded as the 12th Lord Thirlestane and Boltoun [S., 1624] on 1 September 1878.¹

     Maria Anne Barclay-Maitland was the daughter of Reverend Charles Barclay-Maitland and Anne Knott.¹ She married Reverend James Hardwicke Dyer on 9 January 1840.¹ She died on 22 June 1845.¹
     From 9 January 1840, her married name became Dyer.¹

     Alexander Barclay-Maitland was the son of Hon. Charles Barclay-Maitland of Tillicoultrie and Isabel Barclay of Towie.¹ He married Margaret Cooper.¹ He died in 1794.¹
     He gained the rank of Lieutenant in the 100th Regiment.¹ He had a son and a daughter.¹

     Winifred Harriet Ward was born in 1881.¹ She was the daughter of Captain William Somerset Ward and Mary Augusta Gordon.¹ She married Henry Louis King, son of Ross Mahon and Harriet King, on 10 May 1904.¹ She died on 13 November 1964.¹
     From 10 May 1904, her married name became King.¹

     Janet Moncrieffe was born in 1715.¹ She was the daughter of Sir Thomas Moncreiffe of that Ilk, 2nd Bt. and Margaret Smythe.¹ She married Hon. Charles Barclay-Maitland of Tillicoultrie, son of Charles Maitland, 6th Earl of Lauderdale and Lady Elizabeth Ogilvy, on 11 February 1768.¹ She died on 6 November 1799, without issue.¹
     From 11 February 1768, her married name became Barclay-Maitland.¹

     Margaret Smythe was the daughter of Patrick Smythe.¹ A contract for the marriage of Margaret Smythe and Sir Thomas Moncreiffe of that Ilk, 2nd Bt. was signed on 22 December 1701.¹
     From 22 December 1701, her married name became Moncreiffe.¹

     Patrick Smythe lived at Methven, Perthshire, Scotland^G.¹

     Lt.-Col. Frederick Henry Maitland, 13th Earl of Lauderdale was born on 16 December 1840.² He was the son of Maj.-Gen. Frederick Colthurst Maitland and Ann Deering Williams.¹ He married, firstly, Charlotte Sarah Sleigh, daughter of Lt.-Col. B. W. A. Sleigh, on 28 November 1864.² He married, secondly, Ada Twyford Simpson, daughter of Reverend Henry Trail Simpson and Annie Knox Campbell Murray, in 1883.² He died on 1 September 1924 at age 83.²
     He gained the rank of Captain in the Lothian and Berwickshire Yeomanry Cavalry.² He was with the Forest Department, Government of India between 1869 and 1889.² He succeeded as the 13th Earl of Lauderdale [S., 1624] on 13 August 1884.¹ He succeeded as the 14th Lord Maitland of Thirlestane [S., 1590] on 13 August 1884.¹ He succeeded as the 13th Viscount of Lauderdale [S., 1616] on 13 August 1884.¹ He succeeded as the 9th Baronet Maitland [N.S., 1680] on 13 August 1884.¹ He succeeded as the 13th Lord Thirlestane and Boltoun [S., 1624] on 13 August 1884.¹ He succeeded as the 13th Viscount Maitland [S., 1624] on 13 August 1884.¹ He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) of Haddington.² He held the office of Representative Peer [Scotland] between 1888 and 1918.² He held the office of Lord-Lieutenant of Berwickshire between 1889 and 1901.² He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in the Bengal Staff Corps.²
