He was educated at Downside School, Bath, Somerset, EnglandG.1 He fought in the First World War, where he was wounded and mentioned in despatches.1 He was educated at Magdalen College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, EnglandG.1 He was awarded the Military Cross (M.C.) in 1918.1 He fought in the Second World War.1 He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in the Coldstream Guards.1 He succeeded as the 3rd Baronet Coats, of Auchendrane, Ayrshire [U.K., 1905] on 15 July 1959.1

Sarah Mary Coats was born on 18 August 1948.1 She is the daughter of Captain Sir Alastair Francis Stuart Coats, 4th Bt. and Lukyn Gordon.3 She married, firstly, William Humble David Jeremy Ward, 5th Earl of Dudley, son of William Humble David Ward, 4th Earl of Dudley and Stella Carcano y Morra, on 3 July 1972.1 She and William Humble David Jeremy Ward, 5th Earl of Dudley were divorced in 1976.1 She married, secondly, Archibald David Samson Lloyd, son of David Lloyd, on 29 May 1976.1
From 3 July 1972, her married name became Ward. From 29 May 1976, her married name became Lloyd.1 She lived in 2003 at 122 Pelham Road, London, EnglandG.1
