He was given the name of Reginald Ranald Macdonald at birth. He was a practising Advocate in 1798.1 He held the office of HM Sheriff-Depute of Stirling.1 He was Colonel of the Long Island Militia at Benbecula.1 He succeeded as the 2nd Baronet Steuart, of Allantown, co. Lanarks in 1836. In 1836 he succeeded father-in-law by special remainder.1
