He graduated from Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England, with a Master of Arts (M.A.)1 He was a practising barrister.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Roxburghshire between 1880 and 1892.1 He was editor of the Edinburgh Review between 1895 and 1912.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Durham between 1898 and 1906.1 He was Finance Secretary, Treasury in 1903.1

Sir Charles Lister Ryan1 
Sir Charles Lister Ryan was born in 1831 at Worcestershire, England.3 He was the son of Rt. Hon. Sir Edward Ryan and Louisa Whitmore.3 He married Jane Georgina Shaw-Lefevre, daughter of Sir John George Shaw-Lefevre and Rachel Emily Wright, in 1862 at St. Martin, London, England.3 He died in 1920.3
He was Comptroller and Auditor.3 He was appointed Knight Commander, Order of the Bath (K.C.B.)1
