James Hamilton, 2nd Earl of Clanbrassill was born on 23 August 1730.1 He was the son of James Hamilton, 1st Earl of Clanbrassill and Lady Harriet Bentinck.1 He married Hon. Grace Foley, daughter of Thomas Foley, 1st Baron Foley of Kidderminster and Hon. Grace Granville, on 21 May 1774 at Oxford Chapel, Marylebone, London, EnglandG.1 He died on 6 February 1798 at age 67 at Dundalk, County Louth, IrelandG, without issue.1 His will was proven (by probate) in March 1799.1 He was buried at Dundalk, County Louth, IrelandG.1
He held the office of Sheriff of County Louth in 1757.1 He held the office of Chief Remembrancer of the Court of Exchequer [Ireland] between 1757 and 1798.1 He held the office of Governor of County Louth between 1758 and 1798.1 He succeeded as the 2nd Earl of Clanbrassill, co. Armagh [I., 1756] on 17 March 1758.1 He succeeded as the 2nd Baron Claneboye, co. Down [I., 1719] on 17 March 1758.1 He succeeded as the 2nd Viscount of the City of Limerick [I., 1719] on 17 March 1758.1 He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) [Ireland] on 4 July 1766.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Helston between 1768 and 1774.1 He held the office of Custos Rotulorum of County Louth between 1769 and 1798.1 He was appointed Knight, Order of the Garter (K.G.) on 5 February 1783.1
On his death, all of his honours became extinct.1
