He was admitted to Middle Temple entitled to practise as a barrister.1 He was appointed Queen’s Counsel (Q.C.) in 1708.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Whig) for Appleby between 1708 and 1710.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Whig) for Cockermouth between 1710 and 1717.1 He held the office of Solicitor-General from 1714 to 1715.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Whig) for Tewkesbury between 1717 and 1721.1 He held the office of Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster between 1717 and 1727.1 He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) in 1718.1 He held the office of Attorney-General between 1718 and 1720.1 He was created 1st Baron Lechmere of Evesham, co. Worcester [Great Britain] on 4 September 1721.1 On his death, his barony became extinct.1
