Richard Samuel Dermot Chenevix Trench1
He was given the name of Richard Samuel Chenevix Trench at birth.2 He is immortalized by James Joyce in Ulysses as the character Haines who irritates Stephen Dedalus (aka James Joyce) with his eager passion and knowledge of Irish culture. Trench was an Oxford scholar and champion of the Irish language (Gaelic). He spent time in the Aran Islands perfecting his oral skills. He was a friend of Oliver St. John Gogarty, famous Dublin wit, socialite and surgeon (and Joyce’s character Malachi “Buck” Mulligan) which is how the three of them famously ended up together in the Martello tower in Sandycove in 1904 and around whom the opening pages of Ulysses revolve.2 He wrote the book What is the use of reviving Irish, published 1907.2
