Admiral Sir Edward Beckwith Ashmore was born on 11 December 1919.3 He was the son of Vice-Admiral Leslie Haliburton Ashmore and Tamara Vasilevna Schutt.3 He married Elizabeth Mary Doveton Sturdee, daughter of Rear-Admiral Sir Lionel Arthur Doveton Sturdee, 2nd Bt. and Dorothy Mary Mowbray Sayer, on 11 December 1942.3 He died on 28 April 2016 at age 96.4
He was appointed Knight Grand Cross, Order of the Bath (G.C.B.)1 He gained the rank of Admiral of the Fleet.1 He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross (D.S.C.)1 He was appointed Knight Commander, Order of the Bath (K.C.B.) in 1971.2 He was Chief of the Defence Staff in 1977.4 He held the office of First Sea Lord.4
