Philip Stanhope, 5th Earl of Chesterfield1 
Philip Stanhope, 5th Earl of Chesterfield was born on 10 November 1755.1 He was the son of Arthur Charles Stanhope and Margaret Headlam.1 He was baptised on 28 November 1755 at Mansfield Woodhouse, Nottinghamshire, EnglandG.1 He married, firstly, Anne Thistlethwayte, daughter of Reverend Robert Thistlethwayte and Anne Bathurst, on 20 August 1777 at Lambeth Chapel, Lambeth, London, EnglandG.1 He married, secondly, Lady Henrietta Thynne, daughter of Thomas Thynne, 1st Marquess of Bath and Lady Elizabeth Cavendish-Bentinck, on 2 May 1799 at Grosvenor Street, London, EnglandG.1 He died on 29 August 1815 at age 59 at Bretby, Derbyshire, EnglandG.3 His will was proven (by probate) in February 1816.3
He was educated in 1773 at University of Leipzig, Leipzig, Brandenburg, GermanyG.1 He succeeded as the 5th Earl of Chesterfield, co. Derby [E., 1628] on 24 March 1773.1 He succeeded as the 5th Baron Stanhope of Shelford, co. Nottingham [E., 1616] on 24 March 1773.1 He was appointed Fellow, Society of Antiquaries (F.S.A.) on 5 December 1776.1 He was appointed Fellow, Royal Society (F.R.S.) on 19 December 1776.1 He gained the rank of Captain in 1779 in the 85th Foot.1 He held the office of Lord-Lieutenant of Buckinghamshire from 1781 to 1782.1 He held the office of Ambassador to Spain between 1784 and 1787, although he never went to Madrid.1 He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) on 7 January 1784.1 He held the office of Master of the Mint from September 1789 to 1790.1 He held the office of Joint Postmaster-General between 1790 and 1798.1 He held the office of Master of the Horse between 1798 and 1804.1 He was appointed Knight, Order of the Garter (K.G.) on 17 January 1805.1
